Or, there isn't a will, and the family was fighting over where was the property going to go. Who would be in charge of the estate? I realized in all of those cases that a good estate plan would have prevented all of the problems that we were having to deal with at that time. So who really needs estate planning? It really is a function of, are you an adult? And then, what kind of property do you have? What kind of assets? What's your family situation? I believe that anybody who owns a home needs some kind of planning. Anyone who has a child absolutely needs an estate plan as well. Client: "When I was pregnant with our son Layton, I went to a free seminar that she had about estate planning. And what I loved about meeting with Libby is because she took the time to really get to know us and our family,that she was really coming from a place of contribution in figuring out what would be important to us." It can also be important to plan for your pets. And a lot of my clients have already decided who would take care of their pets if they were gone. For estate planning clients I offer a free, initial consultation. I send a worksheet for the client to fill out, so it really triggers that initial thinking process of what we need to decide about. Once they come in, we go over the worksheet together. And we talk about the different types of plans that would be appropriate for their family situation. One of the big things I like to make sure I'm doing is really educating my clients about the estate planning process, and that they know and understand their plan. I'm really looking for long term relationships with my clients as well. I'd like to start when they have children, and then potentially some day make plans for their children.
